Niki de Saint Phalle in the Sprengel Museum

Many people come to the Sprengel Museum especially to see the works by Hannover's honorary citizen on display under the title "La Fête". Some of the works bequeathed to the city by this French artist on her death are featured in the museum's permanent collection. The museum today builds on the original collection owned by Dr Bernhard Sprengel, who favoured German Expressionism and French Modern Art. The last 20 years have seen the Collection expand to include works from the most important epochs of contemporary art. Moreover, the Department of Photography and Media came into being in 1994. The museum holds on average 25 temporary exhibitions each year, numerous symposia and several different series of lectures. It also offers a comprehensive educational programme and since 1993 houses the Kurt Schwitters Archive. The Sprengel Museum thus provides a lively forum for art and art studies.

hannover airport

While in the early years most of the airport's traffic was running through Frankfurt International Airport, today most destinations are served directly. There are services to most European capitals and major cities as well as to major holiday destinations such as Majorca (Spain) or Egypt. In the 1990s trials to establish intercontinental services to the United States and Canada were stopped because of low passenger numbers. Since the end of Cold War Hannover International has become Germany's major airport for services to countries of the former Eastern bloc next to Frankfurt International. There are also a number of no-frills airlines offering service to the airport, the most notable one being TUIfly, which has its base of operations at Hannover Airport.
